How GeFami works
From your first entry to a tree the whole family can explore.
1. Register
Anyone can create a free account with a name, email address and password.
2. Start your tree
Name your tree. We add you as the first person so you can build outwards: parents, partner, children.
3. Add relatives
Each person has names, gender, birth and death dates and places, and notes. Link people as parents, children or partners — siblings appear automatically.
4. Explore
The tree view shows ancestors to great-grandparents and descendants to grandchildren. Click any name to re-centre on that person.
5. Share
Invite existing members by email. Choose moderator to let them edit, or spectator for view-only access.
6. Stay in control
Change roles or revoke access whenever you like. Every change is recorded in the tree’s activity feed.
Questions
How many family trees can I create?
Each member can start one family tree and is its creator and moderator. You can also be invited to any number of other members' trees.
What is the difference between a moderator and a spectator?
Moderators can add, edit and remove people and relationships. Spectators can browse the tree and person pages but cannot change anything.
Can I change someone's role or remove their access?
Yes. The tree's creator can switch a member between moderator and spectator, or revoke their access, at any time from the Sharing page.
Who can see my family tree?
Only you and the members you share it with. Trees are private, never listed publicly and not indexed by search engines.
Does the person I invite need an account?
Yes. Ask them to register first, then share the tree using the email address they signed up with. They'll get a message in their GeFami inbox.
